Project Overview
Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC), a not-for-profit organization wholly owned by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta, is developing Pakoshayimooh (Hope) Village in Edmonton’s Blatchford community.
Pakoshayimooh, meaning hope, reflects the project’s focus on wellness, connection, and community. Pakoshayimooh Village will provide affordable sober-living housing for low-income Indigenous individuals who have completed addiction treatment and are committed to maintaining sobriety.
The development is designed to offer safe, supportive housing within a culturally grounded, supportive environment. It follows a continuum-of-care approach by connecting residents to culturally grounded activities and coordinated supports as they continue their recovery journey outside treatment settings.
This project is being developed in partnership with the City of Edmonton, which has contributed land for the development, and the Government of Alberta, which has provided capital funding support. MCHC will operate Pakoshayimooh Village in collaboration with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s health department.
Why It Matters
Securing stable housing after completing addiction treatment is one of the most significant challenges individuals face following treatment.
For Indigenous people, this challenge is often compounded by long-standing systemic barriers and the impacts of historical and intergenerational trauma, which continue to limit access to safe, affordable housing.
Pakoshayimooh Village will help address this gap by providing affordable sober-living housing for people as they move from treatment to long-term stability. Rooted in Métis values, the project is designed to support continued sobriety, wellness, and a sense of belonging.
This project will aim to:
- Support individuals’ ongoing wellness by providing stable, affordable sober-living housing
- Reduce housing insecurity for Indigenous people who face systemic barriers following treatment
- Create a safe, well-managed environment that supports continued sobriety and community integration
- Positively contribute to the surrounding Blatchford neighbourhood and adjacent communities through thoughtful design, operations, and integration
By combining affordable housing with culturally grounded activities and coordinated supports, Pakoshayimooh Village will support residents in building long-term stability while maintaining sobriety and benefit the broader community.
